RNA and SIRET for French Associations: Complete Guide

Does your association need a SIRET or just an RNA number? Understand the difference and when each identifier is required.

What is the RNA?

The RNA (Répertoire National des Associations — National Association Registry) is the official database that lists all declared associations in France. It is managed by the Ministry of the Interior. Every loi 1901 association declared at the prefecture is automatically registered there.

The RNA number: format and structure

Upon creation, each association receives a unique RNA number. This number is composed of:

W 7 5 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

W — Fixed prefix 75 — Department code (Paris) 1234567 — Sequential number

Does an association need a SIRET?

By default, a loi 1901 association does not have a SIRET number. It is only identified by its RNA number. However, an association must obtain a SIRET in the following cases:

SIRET mandatory if:

  • The association employs staff
  • It receives public grants
  • It carries out an economic activity

SIRET not required if:

  • No employees, only volunteers
  • No grants or economic activity

Frequently asked questions

Can an association have a SIRET without having employees?

Yes, if it receives public grants or carries out an economic activity (product sales, paid services), it may need to obtain a SIRET without having employees.

How to find an association's RNA number?

The Official Journal of associations (journal-officiel.gouv.fr/pages/associations-recherche) allows searching for declared associations and finding their RNA number.

Is an association's SIRET the same format as a company's?

Yes, the format is identical: 14 digits (9-digit SIREN + 5-digit NIC). The only difference is that this SIRET was assigned by INSEE following a specific request rather than automatically at creation.
